Over time, this bacteria accumulates as it feeds on moisture and the limestone filler found in your shingles. Although these streaks are unsightly and significantly reduce your property’s curb appeal, the algae itself will not cause damage to your roof. But, left untreated, the moisture retention and buildup attracts other organisms, such as moss and lichen, which can cause early aging, cracking, rotting, and granule loss of your roof shingles.
Moss is most often found on the north facing side of a roof, or areas sheltered by the trees above. Damp, shady environments create a hotbed for moss growth. Like algae, moss is an ugly blemish on the face of your roof, but over time, it can cause serious deterioration to your shingles. Moss acts as a sponge and holds water on the surface of your roof. Throughout the colder seasons, increased frost damage is a major concern as the freezing and thawing of the moss can crack, bend and warp the shingles. Additionally, as moss continues to spread, the growth will force itself underneath as it reaches edge of a shingle, raising it and exposing the area below.
Lichen is a combination of algae and fungus that usually has a light, mint-green color. Although it doesn't trap as much water against the surface of the roof as moss, it can be just as invasive and damaging. Lichen has a heavy penetrating root system that clings deep into the shingles, making it very difficult to remove. Left untreated, the Lichen will actually eat through the granules on your shingles.
